Among the six films that were released this Friday, ROCK ON has been declared an unabashed hit. What made ROCK ON hit, as compared to other films? First and foremost factor that tilted the scales in favour of ROCK ON was the story. The angst and the frustration of young age, that has to be buried and it continues to simmer and smolders under the structure of career progressions that one builds up in his life, has been brought out in stark relief in ROCK ON.
For the present generation drowning the aspirations of the unfulfilled desires finds its manifestations in series of rock concerts that are held in the country. Rarely has it happened that a rock concert has not been a sell out. In the metropolitan cities the average capacity of a stadium where these concerts are held is between 30000-50000. If even 75% of this crowd decides to have a dekho of a film eulogizing the spirit of freedom then the film is going to hit a bull's eye. This is what happened in the case of ROCK ON as well.
The average viewership in a multiplex is between 400-500 and it is not difficult to find these numbers filling the halls continuously for days on end. The span of rock music has a gap of generation between it, and if from one rock generation to another, they both decide to relive the glory of rock; the film has to be a hit.
Apart from Farhan Akhtar the other characters have an image of rock star associated with them, be it Milind Soman, Luke Kenny, Purab Kohli or Arjun Rampal. From this perspective, ROCK ON makes one believe in the cast as being rock stars in the past. It is what was lacking in other rock music based films, where conventional stars adorned the garb of a rock star. Another factor that could tilt the balance in favour of the film when it shifts out of the metropolitan centres would be the fans of Prachi Desai who indeed would clamour among them to see their favorite icon serenading on a big screen.
It is the angst of the urban existence, which does not allow one to do justice to either of the areas one is associated with, be it the job, hobby or the family. Identification with this angst is easy and therefore the charm that the film has been able to cast over average music lovers.
