New record? Five releases in a day

It is indeed a monumental day for the Indian film industry that today seven films in all would be vying for the eyeballs of the movie goers in the country across the multiplexes that have come to adorn the landscape of the country. Nowhere else in the world would seven films have been released on a single day! Occasion or the immediate provocation is that from next Friday the Shraaddha starts which is not considered auspicious for initiating new activities. The films, which have been released today, are C COMPANY, ROCK ON, CHAMKU, MUKHBIIR, WANTED, HIJACK and WALL E.

From the list it is evident that two films from Hollywood are also vying for the eyeballs, but do they also need to jump into the racetrack, or is it that the local distributors are bringing the Indian sensibilities on to the Hollywood films as well? MUKHBIIR has been promoted as a film that would reimburse the money to the filmgoer if he does not like the film.

If one were to look into the logistics problem that the distributors would be facing is that there would be too few multiplexes having seven screen facilities to run these films simultaneously. Or else, the films would have to run into limited number of shows. For a film on the eve of its release if it is forced to run into limited number of show, the filmgoer would raw a conclusion that the film is not good and may not venture into it at all. Was there a need for all these filmmakers to take this risk, under the perceived notion that a film that is released during Shraaddha would not become a hit?

For Bobby Deol it is more so pertinent as he is returning to the silver screen with CHAMKU after a long time, and his previous outings on the screen have not enamoured the audience so it was more so imperative for him to not join the party this time around, but to herald his comeback at a later date. For C COMPANY and ROCK ON, which do not have mainstream stars to compete amongst them, may harm the prospects of all of them in the long run.

The moot point is should superstition guide the release of a film in such a manner that it has to fight for its space. Were one to view it from the Mumbai territory as well, the films may not be able to reach all of the pockets in one go on the same day.

To an extent belief in the power of the almighty is acceptable, but it ought not go to the extent where almighty may not know whom to favour and whom to discard.
